A brief introduction to the brilliant career of Nina Simone, a troubled soul who found true release in political activism. The first two tracks He Needs Me & I Loves You Porgy are for me absolutely magnificent, these are followed by the lighter Love Me Or Leave & My Baby Just Cares For Me. Other stand outs are I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free, Mississippi Goddam inspired by the death of four school children blown up by white supremacists, a remix of Sinnerman which featured in the uninspiring Michael Mann reboot of Miami Vice. The most dramatic song here is her cover of Strange Fruit (made famous by Billie Holiday) written by Abel Meeropol a teacher who has created one of the most harrowing songs ever on the lynching of African Americans.
